HEALTH INSURANCE
Talk
about confusing!!!
Maybe you’re one of the fortunate ones to have group health insurance
as one of your benefits. You probably won’t appreciate the large
amount your employer has been paying for this coverage, until you
leave the job and have to purchase health insurance privately. Then
reality sets in.
There are three major types of health insurance available:
-
Major Medical
Major Medical Insurance is the type of coverage most of us are accustomed to. We pay a
deductible, a co-insurance, and the insurance company pays the balance
of the bill to the provider. It often includes co-pay doctor visits,
a prescription drug card, a dental plan, and maternity coverage.
-
Hospital and Surgical Indemnity
Hospital and Surgical Indemnity is a less expensive policy than Major
Medical Insurance. Benefits are paid directly to the
policy holder, leaving you responsible for paying the
provider’s bill. Typically this type of policy pays much less in
benefits than a Major Medical policy.
-
High-Deductible Health Savings Account (HDHSA). This product was originally introduced as an MSA (Medical Savings
Account). It was only available to the self-employed, offering simple
one-deductible plans. It also included a separate savings account,
allowing the policy owner to save money in an interest-bearing account
that was to be used for medical expenses only. This savings account
was completely tax-deductible and could be carried over into the next
year if not used for medical expenses. This plan was so well accepted
by the population, that our government has now made it a permanent
plan available to everybody who is employed. The name was changed from
MSA to HDHSA leaving all the above listed benefits. For the
self-employed, the premiums may also be tax-deductible. There are many
exciting additional benefits that we will share with you personally.
